Feed on His faithfulness

I've heard several translations of this verse (Ps 37:3-4), but my good old NKJV says it best, no contest:
"Trust in the Lord, and do good. Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord and He will grant you the desires of your heart."
Feed on His faithfulness. Take it in as your sustenance, make it part of your life. Savour its flavour. Delight in its richness. The faithfulness of the Lord is a deep and satisfying thing! And nothing less than His faithfulness enlivens our own.
Faithfulness is such a plodding virtue, don't you think? Faithfulness, in Screwtape's words (slightly paraphrased) awakes, and even when the world seems devoid of God, still obeys. It is simply that virtue of perseverance that not only continues and completes a work, but begins it. No matter the task - pleasant or distasteful - if God has said it, to faithfulness, it is as good as done. But faithfulness isn't a popular virtue. Its constancy, devotion, and Biblical hope (confidence in the Unseen) is given short shrift in a world that emphasizes the me and now instead of God and Eternity.
But for all of that, it is beautiful. Think of the blessing of God's covenant faithfulness. Of His constant dedication to His promises. Of His unchanging character. It has been said that two forms of God would bring the greatest disaster to His creatures: a God who is powerful, but not good, or a God who is good, but not powerful. But imagine a God who could not be trusted.
But our God can be trusted. Our God is faithful. And that is rich food for the soul!
But His faithfulness inspires our own.
You knew, didn't you, that inspiration is breath? Literally, that is the meaning of the word :) Breathe in the faithfulness of the Lord, and be faithful.
How?
Go and do the word of the Lord.
And here is the freeing thing: faithfulness is not about results. God is teaching me to be more encouraged when I've been faithful - whether that means talking to a friend, taking a walk, writing on this blog, or whatever His wisdom calls me to in each moment - than when I accomplish everything on my "to do list" with time to spare (though when both happen, even better! :P ). I studied all week for an exam and probably got a 70-something on it. I've asked my friends not to use God's Name in vain, and some have ignored my request. I've shared the Gospel with friends and/or pursued them as friends for years only to be rebuffed. Faithfulness is nonplussed.
That's because faithfulness 'trusts in the Lord and does good.' Faithfulness doesn't see with eyes of this world. It's not doing good making sure that good comes out of it, or else! Faithfulness does good because God is sovereign. Faithfulness does its best because God is Lord. Faithfulness knows that God will accomplish His purpose, and that every faithful action cooperates with His invisible-yet-clearly-seen plan of glory!
And so, too, there are promises for the results: "Do not be deceived. God will not be mocked. For whatever a man sows, that he also shall reap." "He who sows to the wind will reap a whirlwind" ...and my personal favorite and verse of the semester...
"Do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season you shall reap, if you do not lose heart."

So, are you faithful? Or are you losing heart? Or worse yet, sowing to the wind?
Am I?
I am, for 'He who began a good work in me will be faithful to complete it in the day of Christ Jesus.'
...and for now, all I have to say is He is faithfully working on my faithfulness! Praise Him! ^_^
