Ezekiel moments

Have you ever had a moment like this?

"I dimly guess what time in mists confounds
yet ever and anon a trumpet sounds
from the hid battlements of eternity.
The shaken mists a space unsettle
then round the half-glimpsed turrets slowly wash again.
But not ere Him who summoneth
I first have seen enwound
In glooming robes purpureal, cypress crowned" ("The Hound of Heaven", Francis Thompson)

I have.
I have been praying (not consistently...) for many years that God would show me His glory and reveal to me His Name, as He did for Moses (Exodus 33:12-34:10), and really to almost every major figure in the Bible...! He has been answering that prayer - not all at once in a blaze of splendor, but as described in the poem: half-glimpses of hid battlements and the Caller in all of His fearsome majesty

Then I looked, and behold, a whirlwind was coming out of the north, a great cloud with raging fire engulfing itself; and brightness was all around it and radiating out of its midst like the color of amber, out of the midst of the fire. Also from within it came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had the likeness of a man. Each one had four faces, and each one had four wings. Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the soles of calves’ feet. They sparkled like the color of burnished bronze. The hands of a man were under their wings on their four sides; and each of the four had faces and wings. Their wings touched one another. The creatures did not turn when they went, but each one went straight forward.
As for the likeness of their faces, each had the face of a man; each of the four had the face of a lion on the right side, each of the four had the face of an ox on the left side, and each of the four had the face of an eagle. Thus were their faces. Their wings stretched upward; two wings of each one touched one another, and two covered their bodies. And each one went straight forward; they went wherever the spirit wanted to go, and they did not turn when they went.
As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, like the appearance of torches going back and forth among the living creatures. The fire was bright, and out of the fire went lightning. And the living creatures ran back and forth, in appearance like a flash of lightning.
Now as I looked at the living creatures, behold, a wheel was on the earth beside each living creature with its four faces. The appearance of the wheels and their workings was like the color of beryl, and all four had the same likeness. The appearance of their workings was, as it were, a wheel in the middle of a wheel. When they moved, they went toward any one of four directions; they did not turn aside when they went. As for their rims, they were so high they were awesome; and their rims were full of eyes, all around the four of them. When the living creatures went, the wheels went beside them; and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up. Wherever the spirit wanted to go, they went, because there the spirit went; and the wheels were lifted together with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. When those went, these went; when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up together with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
The likeness of the firmament above the heads of the living creatures was like the color of an awesome crystal, stretched out over their heads. And under the firmament their wings spread out straight, one toward another. Each one had two which covered one side, and each one had two which covered the other side of the body. When they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of many waters, like the voice of the Almighty, a tumult like the noise of an army; and when they stood still, they let down their wings. A voice came from above the firmament that was over their heads; whenever they stood, they let down their wings.
And above the firmament over their heads was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like a sapphire stone; on the likeness of the throne was a likeness with the appearance of a man high above it. Also from the appearance of His waist and upward I saw, as it were, the color of amber with the appearance of fire all around within it; and from the appearance of His waist and downward I saw, as it were, the appearance of fire with brightness all around. Like the appearance of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the brightness all around it. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. (Ezekiel 1)
Did you get that?
Nearly 2 pages worth of description... and that is just the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.
Not the Lord.
Not the glory of the Lord.
Not the appearance of the glory of the Lord.
But the appearance of the 'likeness' of the glory of the Lord.
Wow!

And maybe to comfort me in my oft-forgetfulness, God shows this to Ezekiel again in chapter 10 :)
And then keeps me from posting it before (I wrote this awhile back) so He can remind me of it again :)

Praise God for His infinite glory! =)

To try to bring some organization to my thoughts on this (:P) :
a) God is amazingly glorious. Like you mentioned, the most we often get is simply that glimpse--yet that glimpse is more amazing than we can capture in words. =) To truly see God and His glory is something I think every Christian dreams of, and longs for. Yet we cannot, until one day He shall make heaven and earth anew, and we shall be entirely sanctified. For what sinfulness can stand before Him? None--"for no man shall see Me, and live".
b) Even the glimpse is amazing. Moses went through practically the same prayer.
"And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.”

19 Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” 20 But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. 22 So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. 23 Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.”"

c) One of the biggest things I have noticed with so much of the popular media bringing up ideas and portraits of 'what god is' or suchlike, from their aliens to their "Wizard of Oz" (a.k.a. the man behind the curtain), is that though they may be powerful, not one of them is glorious. In fact, they often seem the opposite of glorious, and some even never wanted to be 'god'! I think that this, at least partly, is because the glory of God is so convincing--you cannot have even a glimpse of His glory revealed and still remain adamant that He does not exist. Thus, those who do not want to believe God simply make up something that is powerful, but not glorious. Also, it may be because His glory is frightening. For His majesty to cause death to one who is unholy, how can one try to live a life they know is unholy when they face that majesty at the end?

But praise God! For no matter what people think or do, He is transcendentally glorious! And for the Christian in particular, He is transcendentally glorious in a personal, loving, and transforming way. =)

P.S. Any way you could lower the highlight on the second half of your post? It's a tad hard to read. =P Thanks! ^_^
